Did you know that for every three teams we bring to a tournament, we have to provide one judge? Judges cost the team a minimum of $150 per judge per day! Most teams rely on trained parents to make competition affordable for the team. Parent judge training is provided twice a year in groups or 1-1 by request. The first judge training will be held in the Comp Lab on _____ @ _______.
Nervous about being a judge? Don't be! The judging pool at any given tournament is made up by 50% parents, half of which are first time judges. We will make sure you have all of the training you need to feel comfortable at your first judging experience.
Your Impact - If every parent were to judge at just one tournament, we would easily make our judge quotas for the year and save the team $1,000's of dollars!
How do I sign up to volunteer? Take a look at the calendar provided on the website. Talk to you student and try to plan which five tournaments they may want to attend. (Remember – five tournaments is the minimum requirement for including Debate on the high school transcript.) Would one of those five tournaments fit your schedule? You can sign up to judge through the “Tournament Sign Up” tab. You will receive a confirmation email from debate director. One week before the tournament, you will receive the travel information.
Volunteering at the Home Tournament The Tim Averill Invitational - Each October, Manchester Essex hosts hundreds of students from around the nation at our annual tournament. Your debaters will be asked to help us run this enormous event. ME students have a fantastic track record of taking on the responsibilities involved in running the tournament, but they cannot do it without your help. We ask that parents sign up to help judge, assist with concessions, and host out-of-town students. The tournament this year will be held on October 25-26th. Hello Parents! Debate Pizza nights are something new were trying this year, and were hoping they'll help our team's performance at tournaments. At one of these meetings, debaters attending upcoming tournaments will practice debate in a team dinner setting. The expectations for you are to provide some sort of food (a couple pizzas or something like that is good) and a place for the team to meet. Thank you for volunteering!
